The village of old Al Qurna clings to the slopes of the Theban hills filled with endless quantities of tombs from Pharaonic times. For centuaries its inhabitants had unhindered access to these burial grounds. Most of this picturesque settlement was therefore destroyed by government orders in 2007. In spite of this drastic measure the plundering continues to this day. Al Qurna was known as the home to the Al Rasoul clan considered to be the most powerful of tomb robbers in modern Egyptian history. Nevertheless the Rasoul also provided desicive help to French, British and American archeologists such as Howard Carter who discovered the Tuntankamun tomb in 1922.  2016

In the tombs of the middle and new kingdom robbers dig and sift large quantities of earth and rubble in search of ancient treasures. They work almost in the shadow of the Valley of the Kings working in very claustrophobic environments where fatal accidents are common. They also suffer from serious pulmonary ailments due to the constant inhaling of the very fine dust and other toxic particles mainly from bat excrement. Their reward lies in valuable artefacts such as sarcophagus and their contents. This photograph shows the illegal activity of Tomb robbers at work whom if caught will get a 25 year jail sentence. 2016
